It was recently that i came to know that a word like Supermoon existed.I was ignorant about anything related to Astronomy, all my life.
Recently there were photos all over the news feed in my Facebook which did, mention the word "SUPERMOON". At first it did take me to surprise,so i went out and checked as to what is it all about. When i couldn't make any significant difference,i googled.
For all problems in your life "GOOGLE" :).
DEFINITION:The Moon's distance varies each month between approximately 357,000 kilometers (222,000 mi) and 406,000 km (252,000 mi) due to its elliptical orbit around the earth (distances given are center-to-center).
According to NASA, a full moon at perigee is up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than one at its farthest point, or apogee.
Let me put it in simple words,Its the coincidence, when a full moon comes close to earth in its elliptical orbit resulting in making it look very big when seen from earth.Probably,I would have been able to appreciate it,if i ever had spent time watching moon.
The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the Supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but there has been, no evidence established to support the same.
There has been claims that natural disasters such as Tsunami in Tohoku in 2011,and Tsunami and Earthquake in Indian ocean,in 2004 were caused by the Supermoon. These were linked 1-2 week period surrounding a Supermoon.
The most recent occurrence was on August 10, 2014. The next and closest Supermoon of 2014 will be on September 9.
So grab your Cameras, adjust the settings, and capture the "Beauty with spots"!
